Elizabeth Matthews, PhD, Executive
Director
Dr. Matthews received her B.A. in Psychology from new York University, an MA in
Education from Columbia University's Teachers College, and a PhD in Developmental
Psychology from CUNY. For five years, she worked as a developmental specialist overseeing
the assessment and treatment plans for disabled infants, toddlers and preschoolers
at the Neonatal Follow UP Program of the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New
York. Presently she is an Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education at Hunter
College. She became the Executive Director of Project HAPPY in 2006.

Penny Shaw, M.A.,
Project Director
Penny Shaw received her B.A. in Liberal Arts from Bard College and her M.A. in Education
from New York University. She taught at Hunter College in the departments of Health
and Physical Education and Curriculum and Teaching from 1974 to 2003. She has been
the project director for Project HAPPY since it's beginning in January 1981 and
is a teacher of the Alexander Technique.
Leticia Monteiro, M.S.,
Assistant pROJECT Director
Leticia Montiero received her B.S. in Physical Education and her M.S. in Physical
Therapy from Hunter College. She is a certified Pilates instructor and a ranked
Brazilian Martial Artist. She has been part of the staff since the fall term of
1997.
Astria Richards, B.A.,
Assistant Program Director
Astria Richards received her B.A. in Sociology from Hunter College and is planning
further eduction towards a career in Social work. She has been a part of Project
HAPPY staff since the fall term of 2000.

Project HAPPY's advisory committee consists of experts in special education, pediatrics,
developmental disabilities, fund-raising and other areas of interest to the program
management staff. This committee provides ongoing consultative services on an as
needed basis.
